چکیده

The scalar structure of the overfire (fuel-lean) region of sooting turbulent diffusion flames was investigated, considering ethylene and acetylene burning in air. Measurements and predictions are reported of the mean concentrations of major gas species and mean soot volume fractions. Predictions were based on the conserved-scaiar formalism in conjunction with the laminar flamelet approximation. The comparison between predictions and measurements was encouraging, suggesting that state relationships for major gas species, found in laminar diffusion flames, were preserved in the overfire region of the turbulent flames. Measurements also indicated nearly constant soot generation efficiencies from point to point in the overfire region for sufficiently long characteristic residence times to yield nearly universal soot volume fraction state relationships at the same conditions. However, effects attributed to finite-rate chemistry were observed at shorter characteristic residence times, causing spatial variations of soot generation efficiencies in the overfire region, with associated loss of universal soot volume fraction state relationships.

Structure of Overfire Soot in Buoyant Turbulent Diffusion Flames at Long Residence Times

The structure of soot was investigated within the fuel-lean (overfire) region of overventilated buoyant turbulent diffusion flames burning in still air. The study was limited to the long residence time regime where characteristic flame residence times are roughly more than an order of magnitude longer than the laminar smoke point residence time and soot generation factors (the mass of soot emit...

Transport properties in fully developed turbulent premixed flames

Fully developed stationary premixed flames are obtained by DNS in an incoming homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow. Analysis based on the Favre-averaged transport equation of turbulent kinetic energy shows that pressure gradient term and pressure work term increase turbulent kinetic energy in the flame region, and these terms produce anisotropic turbulence. The counter-gradient diffusion domina...

Transport properties in turbulent premixed flames

In order to evaluate transport properties in turbulent premixed flames, a propagating turbulent premixed flame in an incoming homogeneous isotropic turbulence is directly simulated assuming a single-step irreversible Arrhenius-type reaction. To investigate the production of turbulent kinetic energy in the flame region, Favre averaged transport equation of turbulent kinetic energy along streamwi...

Two-dimensional imaging of soot volume fraction and OH in turbulent jet diffusion flames spanning low to high mixing rates

Simultaneous planar measurements of laser-induced incandescence (LII) and Laser-Induced Fluorescence of OH radical were carried out in turbulent jet flames from a simple jet, precessing jet and bluff body burner firing natural gas. These flames span a wide range of global mixing rates and sooting characteristics, and are selected because measurements of total NOx emissions, radiant fraction and...
